Campus Development and TU Berlin’s Science Pavilion

TU Berlin has partnered with the local government of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and the University of the Arts Berlin in order to build a more sustainable and attractive campus also for tourists and the wider public. The university’s 12 Million Euro GRW project (Gemeinschaftsaufgabe - Verbesserung der regionalen Wirtschaftsstruktur) will see Campus Charlottenburg become the site for a series of innovative and historically informed visitor paths that will culminate in the construction of a new Science Pavilion. The pavilion will exhibit part of the university's mineralogical collection and house Science Gallery Berlin. It will thus act as a meeting point and connect the tracks of science and art, campus stories, historical overlays, and the university’s numerous collections. Completion of the GRW project is targeted for the first quarter of 2026, and is being developed through a series of participatory, transdisciplinary, and sustainable teaching and research workshops.

Sustainability in design and construction

The pavilion is being planned as an exemplary, environmentally friendly building and as a real laboratory for sustainable planning and construction. It will be constructed exclusively from renewable raw and building materials, reused recycled materials and with the smallest possible footprint. Visitors will be able to experience the sustainable planning - the innovative load-bearing system made of reclaimed wood will be a design element, the foundation will largely avoid the use of sealants, concrete and steel, and the building will be designed as a low-tech house.

The planning for the new pavilion and redesign of the landscape has been developed by students of the TU Berlin. In various successive courses, student projects were developed at the Natural Building Lab of the TU Berlin, among others, in cooperation with other departments and experts, which in the end were incorporated into the final planning. In April 2022, the planning by TU Berlin's student Projektbüro (project office) for the museum pavilion and the campus was handed over to a collaborative general planning team consisting of architects, landscape architects, specialist planners and exhibition designers and will now be realized through to 2026.
